Kinja'd!!!

Being told bullshit excuses by my manager. This is a rant about work that really pissed me off and I kinda want some advice here. Have a Macan Turbo I saw today as compensation.

As most of you know I'm a 16 year old high school student. I bag groceries at Publix. Yes I know I am lucky to even have a job in the first place. But it's a job I don't have any passion for. And lately its been driving me crazy and stressing me out. Today especially put me over the edge.

Two of my fellow coworkers who haven't been here much longer than me got cross-trained recently to cashier. I was told back in November that I was supposed to be part of that as well. Well it never happened. I went to my manager today and asked her what it takes to be crosstrained. "Ohh........ umm well there's currently a long line of people waiting. I try to base it off of seniority." I just reminded her of the fact that I have been there for over 10 months at this point and kinda walked off.

Now this was a bullshit answer. There cannot be that long of line. Why? Because one of the girls who got crosstrained has been there a month longer than me. She was the person hired right before I was. Therefore, I would be next in this chain. Unless she is randomly going to start training the mentally handicapped (challenged? I'm not sure what the politically correct term is) who have been baggers for over 10 years then there isn't anyone before. If she goes and starts training anyone else, they have been here for a shorter time than I have and then the seniority doesn't matter at all.

I'm okay if she doesn't want to cross train me. If I'm not good enough yet or if she doesn't think I'm ready thats fine. Just say so. Or just say that we don't really need any other cashiers right now (which btw is not true at all because the store goes into a daily panic over not enough cahsiers on). I hate that she lied to me so blatantly and thought I wouldn't notice. I'm not an idiot. I hate hearing bullshit excuses so much.

The job has also sucked lately because we are very busy. Our store is one of the busiest because we are snowbird central. I guess they want to save money so they have been cutting hours. For 45 minutes today, I was the only bagger. But we were busy, so FOUR registers were open. I was bouncing back and forth trying to see who had the biggest order at any given time. I love it then when it slows for two seconds and my manager comes out and asks me if the lot is clear. I haven't been able to step outside so no its full of carts. But I cannot get them all myself if I stick to your rule of no more than 5 at a time.

And tonight we had a point where there were 2 carts at the entrance. That was it. So I go up front and tell my manager. Usually you go and call for the stock clerks to do so. She just sent me back out even though I had been out clearing it to the best of my abilities for 30 minutes.

I feel as if she hates me. She's mad because I make her fill out some paperwork for my school program and because I was a special add-on employee who she didn't hire. It just is so annoying.

I look for new jobs every day. I really want to work with my passion but like no one wants to hire me at 16. Publix is also good to stick with because its a secure job and they will pay for like all my college if I stay with them. I just physically and mentally am running out of strength. What do I do?

Thanks for letting me rant.

Is there an equivalent place you could get a cashier job in town? Or go to another place to get relevant experience? I did that job in college - cashier - and it's not easy. But it's better than bagging, to be sure.

Obviously a job is good. However, if it's not working, moving on is the best choice. I understand, I had to take my employer to the EEOC (Employment Equality part of the gov't) at 18 because they kept cutting my hours because I wouldn't work Sundays for religous reasons.

Long story short, look for more work through traditional methods. Also, ask your friends and parents' friends i they need anyone where they work or know someone who needs help in their small business. Not great benefits, but it can be much better.

Basically all grocery stores do this shit. The better worker you are, the less likely you're going to get a "promotion" or department transfer. You're only 16 and maybe they needed some 18 year olds for alcohol, or maybe they felt like getting some cheaper labor. Shit happens, but get out as soon as you can because it's a trap.

I've been working for Publix for over 3 years now. I was a bagger for a month, got promoted to cashier, transferred stores after 2 years, then after 8 months at my new store got promoted to Customer Service Staff. It definitely doesn't have anything to do with seniority or asking the manager. Its all about letting the manager see your work ethic, reliability and attitude towards customer service. In my experience managers typically get moved around every few months anyway, and if you have an issue with a particular manager it generally isn't too difficult to transfer stores yourself.

I plan on making Publix my career so I guess my outlook is different to yours, but I would suggest sticking with it. Just do a damn good job...it doesn't go unnoticed.

Try to find another job, you don't have to take that bullshit. I know I didnt when I worked at the hellhole Mcalisters Deli (Avoid that place like the plague for employment, place is a health hazard in every sense). I had the luxury of being able to quit without another job lined up, which from my understanding, is a luxury you don't have. I quit right before I was supposed to come in for the busy dinner rush. Quite possibly the best feeling in the world.

Just smile, nod, do whatever and keep looking for another job anywhere you can.

I'm kinda in the same boat with my employer. I work for a chain parts store. Admittedly I've only been there since Halloween 2014, but I was hired as a delivery driver. My first week I filled in for the guy who puts away stock because he sprained his ankle and was out on workers comp. Apparently because of the alpha-numeric sequencing skills I learned in kindergarten, I'm a million times better than any other stock person they've had. From day one, the supposed "parts pros" who were working there before I started have been asking me for help serving customers. One new "parts pro", five more delivery drivers, and a dispatcher for the drivers have been hired since I started. My manager has specifically sat me down and told me that they were going to train me for every single one of those positions (one of which I already hold) and they haven't yet. Yet, for eight hours every day, all I do is pick things up and put them down again somewhere else, and answer the odd question from someone who's been working there far longer than I have about where something is in the store, what the difference is between two things, what on earth this customer is asking for, and listen to each staff member bickering about some other staff member, or the shipper/receiver guy (50 year old stoner/arcade-loitering-punk-kid know-it-all type) ranting about something he knows absolutely nothing about... it's frustrating. Fortunately I've got a seasonal position with Parks Canada (i.e. the National Park Service or whatever you call it south of the 49th) and I'll be out of here in four months, and making twice as much doing half as much work. My managers don't know that yet, but I'm debating letting it slip out some time. I'm pretty sure I'm valuable to them (cause I actually, you know, show up every day and do my friggen job!) and they might want to try better at keeping me around...

Let me make this clear... and don't take it as me having a massive ego. I am one of the better baggers there. I currently hold the record for getting the most appreciation papers from customers "thanking me for doing my part". I have no issues with really any employees. I've shopped at this store for 12 years so I know where everything is. I even got a personal thank you from the actual store manager the other day. Its only the customer service manager I have an issue with. And sadly everyone but her has moved at this point. She has been here for 4 years and has no real plans of leaving unless she can make the jump to full store manager.

I wanted to see myself with Publix for quite some time; maybe buy some stocks and what not. But this is just really getting annoying.

Im tempted to switch stores and go into grocery stocking shelves.

And I think thats what it is.. I dont mean to sound full of myself but I am one of the better employees there and most everyone sees it. They really don't want me to go onto register because Im one of the few who gets carts in and doesn't waste time.

It's part of their program if you stay with them during it they will pay full ride for like business or marketing degrees. You just have to work 15 hours a week to keep it. And the stock when you turn 18 is great since it isn't open to the public. But its really getting annoying at this point.

Well, you have a couple of options here. The first being that given that you're in central/south Florida (Sarasota IIRC?) there is probably a Publix on every street corner so you could easily get into another store if you wanted to, but your reputation would be starting from scratch, and I've never personally seen a store that accepts minors into grocery. Some stores hire cashiers directly, so you might be able to get simultaneously transferred and crosstrained.

The other is the open door policy. You can speak to the store manager directly and state a genuine concern that the customer service manager has some sort of unreasonable disposition towards you that is in no way related to your efforts on the clock. Or speak to the CSM yourself and ask them what they think you can do to better provide premier service and get a 110+ on your eval.

If the CSM gives you more BS excuses as to why you haven't been promoted, I would call the PIP line. Just remember that being crosstrained will get you more hours but you don't get a raise or the cashier uniform until your job class changes.

Might as well learn while you're young. Management doesn't like to be blunt and talk about issues. Management likes to tip toe around issues and do things entirely opposite of what is actually logical. Management also hates it when employees stir the proverbial pot and make them look bad, even though (or perhaps because) they know they're entirely useless. Always get promises in writing from management, right then and there, or they will likely never happen. If your manager didn't hire you, why would she move you up over someone she did hire? That would be like her saying that someone else has better hiring skills than she does.

I'm not saying everyone is like this, but a stupidly large percentage are. It's frustrating, and that's one hell of an understatement.

Its tempting to switch stores at this point because there are options. Like I said though I just like my store because well its my Publix. Ive watched other people move up and around no problem.

I really dont want to make this a bigger deal than it needs to be. But kevin the store manager is a cool reasonable guy so it is kind of tempting.

Funny story about the eval. When I had my last one 3 months ago I got a 108. I asked what I can do to be better and get a higher score. Her response "exactly what your doing now". I dont know if every store is like this but she refuses to give over 110 and put us in that top tier.

Again I dont want problems I just would rather have an honest answer than this shit shes trying to pull.

I want the extra hours honestly because I may be in hs but I have tons of bills to pay. Virtually no one at our store actually has the proper uniform because well I dont really know. They just dont.

again ive never once called out sick. I was late one time but I called them 7 hours before my shift started to tell them this (had a test after school I needed to take and was only 15 minutes late).? I usually pick up holiday shifts to try and help them out. Im one of the few who does the 2 +2 rule and am comfortable doing any job they assign me whether it be sweeping or cleaning restrooms. Im not one to compalin normally but I have limits.

Maybe so. Anyway, the seats are absolutely terrific. They hold you in perfectly and yet aren't so tight as to make you uncomfortable. In addition, it drives much more like a car than an SUV which was really appealing to me. Finally, the engines are terrific because they make their power very low (the Turbo makes peak torque at something like 1,300 rpm) and continue it throughout the rev range.

I'm not sure I'm keen on such low turbo spooling. I just think it may do a number on fuel economy, especially if you're one to have a case of the lead foot every now and then like myself. The ST's turbo spools low as well, at around 1800rpm; while I think it gives the benefit of linear power through the rpms, and also gives it the power curve similar to an normally aspirated V6, I'm just not sure of the fuel economy. Couldn't a normally aspirated engine be tuned to produce the sane power and torque curve? I can't imagine it being too difficult.

I do appreciate the fact that it drives more like a car than an SUV, that's probably the most important characteristic to me.

I can't remember if it comes with optional seats, either way, I'm sure it's a wonderful place to sit in.

Most likely but it would probably have to be a larger displacement. Realistically, even the EPA mileage wasn't very good as the Turbo was only rated at something like 23 mpg on the highway.

It was for me as well. I love the extra space but don't want to feel like I'm driving a huge, unwieldy machine.

I believe it comes standard with 14-way adjustable seats but the Turbo I tested had the 18-way ones.

Something I also didn't mention was the head and legroom. With the front seat at my preferred setting, I was still able to fit in the backseat which surprised me quite a bit. In addition, I actually had headroom in the backseat. Being 6'5'', you can imagine how important things like this are for me.

Hmm it makes me wonder, because I bet Porsche could make some more mone if they offered a powerkit much like they do on the Carrera S and even the Turbo or Turbo S I believe.

It's exactly the reason my friends have referred to the Cayenne as a truck, that I prefer the Macan.

I'm not really keen on the multi-way seats. I prefer to keep things simple and I've only ever had manual seats in my three cars. Power seats are nice, but seeing as I always think about getting cars with the longest term in mind, it'd be another possible pricey thing to fix in the future to me.

Being 5'10" has always seemed to me to be the best height, because I can fit in just about every car without discomfort and very few, if any adjustments in the seats whatsoever. Hearing that the space is most comfortable for someone 6'5" is wonderful news for me.

Kinja'd!!! CAcoalminer > K-Roll-PorscheTamer
01/10/2015 at 00:33

Kinja'd!!!0

What does this powerkit include?

That makes sense but I think that those are the only seats available. I could be wrong though.

That is actually about the perfect height, especially for the reasons you listed. I was very impressed with the front seat also because I could actually lower it enough to where I wasn't having to crane my head in order to see out (an annoyance I've had to deal with before). Concerning my height, I should probably make a note that I was 6'5'' in my prime and might have lost an inch or two or the years. Haha

Kinja'd!!! K-Roll-PorscheTamer > CAcoalminer

From Porsche:

"In plain figures, we have managed to increase power output from 294 kW (400 hp) to 316 kW (430 hp) and improve acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h by 0.1 seconds. The 911 Carrera S models with PDK¹ and SPORT PLUS button complete the sprint in an impressive 4.0 seconds. The fastest variant in the range reaches a top speed of 308 km/h.

To develop the Powerkit, a number of sophisticated measures were needed . The cylinder head intake ports have been reworked and given a polished finish. The stroke of the intake camshaft has been increased and the electronic engine management adapted accordingly.

The highlight of the Carrera S Powerkit is the newly developed variable resonance intake manifold with six plus one switchable valves. This innovation enables the system to switch between power- and torque-optimised geometries and deliver a boost in power output, particularly in the upper speed range. The extra heat generated by power increase is dissipated by an additional centre radiator.

Other components include the Sport Chrono Package with dynamic engine mounts, the sports exhaust system with two specially designed twin tailpipes and the titanium-coloured engine cover featuring inlays in carbon."

I mean, i it's the only option, then I really can't complain, but I think I'd take the one with the least "ways", I'm not really used to luxury anything.

Sounds very good about the seat placement though. I don't think I've seen any car seats that you can actually lower straight down, or raise up. I wonder if that means that my dad may have been taller than 6' tall at one point...That means I might get shorter than 5'10"? That's disheartening.

Interesting. Sounds like a fairly thorough package.

Well, it doesn't happen to everyone but as you age your spine can begin to compress and you do lose a bit of height. You shouldn't worry though because, even if you do experience it, you won't lose much height (1-2 inches like I mentioned). Here's a good explanation:

It's definitely worth the money in my opinion. If not for "exclusivity" then just a mechanically excellent power boost over the stock engine.

It doesn't sound as bad as I feared now. I still don't like it, but there isn't much I can do about it either.

I agree.

What I've been told is just try to eat well and exercise, especially as you get older, and you should be ok.

It sounds doable to me. Perhaps there is hope after all.

Speaking of hope, the 911 and force induced engines for the future, what do you think? Do you have any concerns, thoughts, fears?

Ofcourse there is hope.

Well, I will definitely miss the high rpm NA engines. I don't know if anything will ever match the splendid nature of the RS 4.0's Metzger engine, it was simply perfect in my opinion. That being said, I do think turbocharged engines will provide even bigger power figures than we have already seen. Also, their power figures will be more accessible throughout a greater amount of the power band. In addition, thanks to cars like the Noble M600 and Mercedes-AMG GT S, I'm not as worried that turbocharged engines will sound unappealing.

http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/mercedes-amg-g…

In short, while I'll definitely miss the NA motors, I don't think it will be quite so bad. What are your thoughts?

Ok come take the keys

It's not paid off though

I just wish it was a C2S or GTS

The RustoCar doesn't have many options

Kinja'd!!!1

I can't, but that doesn't matter, at all.

It doesn't matter that it isn't a C2S or a GTS or that it doesn't have many options.

It's a 911, it doesn't need options, it doesn't need to be the end all in power, that's not what a 911 is or ever will be about. it's about the sincere pleasure of driving, the serene howl of a flat six, the firm grip of that steering wheel as you row or tap through gears and dance with the car, ass out, singing songs of bliss and joy.

It is the ultimate expression of classic German engineering and the finest in craftsmanship over the past 50 years. Never has it been about being more powerful than the "other guy", you know what, fuck the other guy! He's not even important, nothing he or she says or does matters here, it's you and your Porsche, taking on all the shit the world has to give you, and not one thing on this planet can do a damn thing about it; naturally aspirated, or force induced.

How do I know this? Because I've experienced every single generation of the 911 and even when I was in a 600hp 997 Turbo, I still longed for the 150hp 911 in my garage; not because it's my 911, but because it was enough. Enough power for fun and enjoyment. Horsepower is NOT a measurement of fun with the 911, it never has been and it never will be.

So buck up, chin up, and get in that car right now, and go find some curvy road, and let that car do the dance, the dance of over 50 years of perfection and passion.

Oh. Hmm... I guess I forgot to mention it.

Kinja'd!!! K-Roll-PorscheTamer > CAcoalminer

Kinja'd!!!0

My problem is that there shouldn't be some "horsepower war", it isn't necessary. I don't care about the power figures(I care about torque, but that's another thing), I care about the overall drive, and the 911 has never been about being the most powerful car in the world; it's certainly been about being the fastest, but not the most powerful.

One of the reasons I'm hoping that the only real increase is in torque rather than horsepower, and also, linear power delivery and throttle response. I know what turbos do to cars, decreasing throttle response and turbo lag, I'm not a fan of that nor will I ever be.

Further more, sound is one the most important and integral parts of driving, so for me, it has to be done to best of their ability. I am praying that they don't go the route BMW has gone with their speaker-fed exhaust notes that can't be disabled without turning off the radio completely. I do trust that Porsche will do their best to fine-tune the sound and try to maintain the N/A sound with as little turbo noise as possible.

The other thing is actually power. I don't think Turbo and Turbo S owners will want to see Carreras and Carrera S models surpassing them at a lower price point than what they payed($150-190k), that would be pretty annoying and I bet it'd even feel like betrayal of sorts to an extent.

It's also saddening that after 40 years, we may not have a 911 Turbo anymore because of this, because every 911 will be a turbo.

But more importantly, this changes up things for me, I wanted a new N/A 911 when I get out of college(if I do, or ever do), that's not happening now. It's not that the new FI cars will be a disappointment, far from it I hope, but it's not what I want my new 911 to be. Sure I can go get a used or CPO one and it'll be more logical and lower in price, but it won't exactly be what I was hoping for either. So on that front, I lose either way.

Thanks for Macan pic. I test drove a Macan S and it's going to be my next target after 3yrs of saving.

My suggestion is to elevate yourself and start pursuing while not investing emotions. Its super hard to do, i dont think i practice that fully even when i am 26. But really try to be objective and see things holistically.

Your coworkers are not the brightest bunch, i would say since it's a secure job, do it while on shift but put your energy into learning and doing your passion work. No one wants to hire you while 16? Start working on it during your own time, by the time you are "of age" to be hired, you got more experience under the belt compare to your peer.

also, I don't believe in xx years of experience. If you do the same thing over 10 years, how is that better than 1 year of experience when the work can be master in 3 months time? Always be learning is the key. 5years from now, when you are working on your passion, you will be glad you didn't get cross trained for cashier work and stuck in a job you dont love through out college.

I'm sure it's because of the horror stories that you hear about online. My biggest suggestion is to do your homework and find a good dealership. Interesting.

Exactly my point. There is no reason that people should be afraid of used cars as long as they do their homework. You can get a terrific vehicle and avoid the massive depreciation hit. However, what really annoys me is when people feel that any sports car with over 10,000 miles is ruined. I mean seriously? Modern vehicles are much better than that.

You'd be surprised. Most vehicles, including Porsches, are actually just ordered by the dealer with the most popular options that they know people want. It would be interesting to see what percentage of annual production is actually a custom build and not just a standard dealer order.
